  • RS Vareo at 2016 Dinghy Show

Bassenthwaite Sailing Club 11th August 2007

The weather conditions were far from ideal for this event with a fitful and variable breeze occasionally fading to nothing. Bassenthwaite Sailing Club and in particular, the Race Officer, Roy Blackburn, did their best to put on a good day's racing.

We welcomed a couple of new sailors to the Series and one of them, Andy Flitcroft who had never previously sailed against another Vareo, disappeared off into the distance in race 1, pursued by Rory Yardley, putting his local knowledge to good use. Race 2 saw the same two finish in the top two positions but with Rory winning. David Brown after an argument with a National 12 snapped his main halliard and crept over the finish line in third place with a slowly lowering sail. Cheryl unfortunately damaged her ankle in this race (Was that caused by an over cooked roll tack?) and was unable to take any further part. The final race started after 5 o'clock, following earlier postponements and for Rory and Andy, this was the decider. Rory failed to find the form shown in the earlier races and Martin finally managed to get going, leading through to the finish with Andy never far behind.

Although the wind certainly didn't help, the day was enjoyed by all and the social arrangements at Bassenthwaite are always a good way to finish the day.

This was the third and final event in the inaugural, Northern RS Vareo Series and the overall winner of the Series is David Brown.
