Results / Open Yorkshire Dales SC - 15/07/2007

RS Vareo Northern Series at Yorkshire Dales SC 15th July 2007
 
After a slight delay setting a long windward /leeward course, race 1 for the fleet of 9 Vareos from 4 different clubs got away cleanly  in a pleasantly warm force 2-3 breeze. David Brown from Burwain, with excellent boat speed and ability to pick the right shifts was first to the windward mark and extended his lead in the downwind leg to lead the rest of the fleet by a good margin. Rather tantalisingly, he remained about the same distance ahead for the remainder of the race until the final offwind leg when Paul Hargreaves, with some superb downwind sailing just overtook David at the last mark only for David to regain the lead by inches at the finish. Third and fourth positions were equally close with Martin Barrett  of the home club just getting ahead of Adrian from Filey SC. The rest of the fleet had an excellent race with much place changing and close racing.

Race 2 after lunch started in much the same manner but the weather became rather more typical for Grimwith with a continuous rain falling. This time it was Ade's turn to pursue Dave but again Dave hung on for the win. With no discard allowed, various discussions were held in the 'clubouse' about how to nobble Dave. 2Nd, 3rd and 4th were all on 6 points so there was everything to sail for in the final race.

In the event, Ade had an excellent start, taking the lead and holding it to the end with Dave coming a relaxed second. Paul and Martin, fighting for 3rd place were neck and neck at the final mark with Martin just sneaking inside at the gybe to claim third place overall. Cheryl Wood from Pennine SC was in 3rd place in the race. An excellent achievement since she only started sailing the Vareo a few weeks earlier.

The next event in the Northern Series is at Bassenthwaite on the 11th and 12th of August and already, there seems a good number likely to attend.
