RS Vareo Northern Circuit - Burwain, 31st March

Twelve boats entered the first Vareo open meeting to be held at Burwain Sailing Club, including travellers from as far afield as Kent and Lowestoft. However the day got off to a bad start for Burwain sailor Paul Hargreaves, who whilst practising before the start of the first race had a catastrophic failure in the structure of his boat, resulting in a 4 foot gash where the deck should be fastened to the hull! Still on positive note, at least it gave Paul time to take some excellent photos of the event. So eleven boats took to the water for the first race, and in a modest, but building breeze, it was visitor Nick Craigmore who, after becoming familiar with the layout of the marks, lead the fleet home. Burwain sailor David Brown came in second, with Martin Barett third. After lunch, with the breeze freshening considerably, the second race got underway, again with 11 starters. Nick Craigmore and Martin Barett quickly established a lead, closely followed by David Brown and the rest of the fleet in hot pursuit. As the race progressed the wind strengthened and conditions became more and more challenging, resulting in a continuous stream of work for both rescue boats in attandance. By the end of the race, four competitors had retired, whilst the two race leaders had coped best of all with the conditions and steadily increased their lead to finish first and second in the race. After a fairly long delay to rescue stranded competitors, and with the conditions seeming unlikely to ease, the decision was taken to abandon race 3. Congratulations go to Nick Craigmore who finished as outright winner, and Martin Barett as runner-up.
