RS Vareo Fat Face Racing Circuit
The RS Vareo Fat Face Circuit was completed at Bartley on 21st Aug, with
a number of competitors still in with a chance of winning overall.
The circuit started back in April at Carsington with 11 hardy sailors
braving the big winds and cold water resulting in a victory for Martin
Barrett (Craven SC). The circuit moved on to Lee on Solent where Tim
Greenwood (Bristol Corinthian YC) destroyed the opposition, winning 5 out
of 6 races, only being stopped from a clean sweep by being capsized by a
passing RS400!
On to Burghfield in June, and after a well attended training day a record
22 boats contested a very windless days racing.
Local expert Christopher Froehlich (Burghfield) showed everyone the way
home, closely followed by Paul Craft (Teign Corinthian), who having also
posted a 3rd at Carsington and a 4th at Lee was top of the overall
results.
The Olympic venue of Weymouth and Portland was the next stop for the
intrepid Vareos, and in perfect conditions Mark Williams (LLandegfedd
SC) triumphed.
The 5th event was held at Queen Mary, with 16 boats including all the
overall leaders turning up. Barrett had a great first day winning all 3
races, and the Sunday was Greenwoods day winning 2 out of 3. Newcomer
Matt Moore (Middle Nene SC) crashed the party by picking up his first win
on the circuit to give Barrett his second event win.
The final event of the circuit was held at Bartley with 5 sailors still
in a position to win the overall title. True to the form book Barrett and
Greenwood shared the wins, with Greenwood winning the day, but Barrett
taking second place to take the overall title by 1 point with 2 wins and
a second to Greenwoods 2 wins and a third. Craft took third place,
Froehlich 4th, Nigel Tinkler (Llandegfedd SC) 5th and Nicholas Crickmore
(WOYBC) 6th.
There were 35 competitors on the Fat Face Circuit this year, the Vareo
has certainly come of age.
