Warm sunshine and a full reservoir greeted the 24 competitors at the
Bough Beech RS200 open meeting on 22nd April. Unfortunately the wind
refused to co-operate in making it a perfect day and remained light and
fickle throughout.
A big wind shift at the start of the first race led to a lot of bunching
by the committee boat. This suited Simon & Mary Davis who powered out of
the middle of the line to round the windward mark just behind former
National Champion Tom Hewitson & Matthew Giles, and just ahead of Steve
Jannering & Lottie Wakeling. Hewitson/Giles slowly pulled away while the
places behind them continually swapped in the ever changing wind. At the
finish it was Hewitson/Giles first ahead of Chris Catt and Andrew &
Geraldine Peters.
The start of the second race had to be abandoned after a wind shift made
it almost impossible to cross the line on starboard. The fleet got away
at the second attempt and at the windward mark it was Catt who led from
the Daviss and Hewitson/Giles. Unfortunately for the leaders the wind
died down the run allowing the boats behind to catch up in (slightly)
more breeze. At the finish it was local sailors Andy & Robert Savell who
won from Jannering with Fiona Hall & Andy Kerr in third.
After lunch spent contemplating a glassy looking reservoir the fleet were
surprised to see the race officer heading back out in the afternoon.
However a light breeze did spring up for the start of the third race and
this time it was Dave & Nicky Derby who squeezed round the windward mark
first ahead of Ian Clark & Jamine Blundell and the Savells. The wind
continued to fade however and after 2 laps the race officer called it a
day with the Derbys winning from Clark and Fiona Hall.
The mixed results meant that only 2 points separated the first five
places, but it was the local sailors Dave & Nicky Derby who won on count
back from Andy & Robert Savell.
